On September 10, 2020, the State Board of Education (SBE) adopted criteria and guidance to award a State Seal of Civic Engagement (SSCE) to California’s 11th and 12th grade students who demonstrate excellence in civics education and participation, and an understanding of the United States Constitution, the California Constitution, and the democratic system of government. In order for students to earn the SSCE, LEAs are provided a five criteria framework of student qualifications, based on their own local contexts.
Helpful resources for LEAs to develop local criteria for the SSCE:
- California Department of Education’s SSCE website
- California Department of Education/Los Angeles County Office of Education SSCE webinar (Access Passcode: %fY30@.u)
- SSCE criteria development resources developed through the Content, Literacy, Inquiry, Citizenship (CLIC) network
- SSCE Implementation Toolkit created by the Santa Clara County Office of Education
- SSCE Work Group webpage
