Welcome Parents and Community Members!

mother_and_childYou are important partners in supporting young people and their education. We want to expand your understanding of the California State Standards so that you can support young people’s education and help them prepare to shape the future for all of us.

The California State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. These students will create and collaborate as innovators in the future to come.

Please join in supporting the success of all students in fulfilling the potential of the California State Standards.

ESSA Regional Stakeholder Meetings

As part of California’s transition to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), California must submit an ESSA State Plan to the U.S. Department of Education. The State Plan will describe the State’s implementation of standards, assessment, accountability, and assistance programs and will move us toward California’s goal of having a single, coherent local, state, and federal education system. The California Department of Education (CDE) is committed to ensuring a transparent transition to the new law and developing an ESSA State Plan that is informed by the voices of diverse Californians. The Council of the Great City Schools' parent roadmaps in English language arts/literacy provide guidance to parents about what their children will be learning and how they can support that learning in grades K-8.

These parent roadmaps for each grade level also provide three-year snapshots showing how selected standards progress from year to year so that students will be college and career ready upon their graduation from high school.
