  • Dates: 27 – 27 Apr, 2020
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Elderwood Room

Teaching text complexity, close reading, inquiry, and ELD through the visual and performing arts.

Curious to know how the arts can support literacy and ELD instruction? Focusing on historical context, Think Outside the Book utilizes primary and secondary sources to develop the essential skills of inquiry and observation. Teachers will discover creative ways to build students' content knowledge and encourage critical thinking through arts investigation.

Participants will engage in a variety of discussions, protocols, and strategies that support rigorous and relevant teaching across all disciplines. The California State Standards define all forms of artwork (dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts) as types of informational text and this workshop showcases a variety of strategies to encourage close reading of these texts.
