Free Professional Development Program: Teaching Civics through History!

Tulare County Office of Education, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, is excited to provide a free professional development opportunity for 30 teachers of 11th or 12th grade in the Central Valley. Participation will only be guaranteed for the first 30 registered 11th/12th grade teachers.

Teaching Civics through History will focus on civic engagement as an integral part of American history.

Participation includes:

  • Two professional development days on Voting Rights and the First Amendment, with lectures by a leading historian, pedagogical strategies introduced by master teachers, and free breakfast, lunch, and classroom materials.
    • Dates will be: January 16, 2020 and February 4, 2020
    • Substitute teacher pay (up to $150/day) is available for all participating teachers
  • Teaching one of the units in your classroom by the end of the school year. You will have access to a Teaching Civics through History website with units, digital resources, and the educator guide.
  • Leading your students through their own civics projects. Civics project guidance and a $100 stipend to assist with associated costs will be provided.

The program is led by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and supported by a grant from the Stuart Foundation.
