Reading Units of Study (Grades K-8)

  • Dates: 08 – 09 Jun, 2020
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Aspen Room

Ready to re-imagine reading instruction in the K-8 setting? Reader's Workshop is a comprehensive approach which enables the busy classroom teacher to effectively reach and teach developing readers. Through the research-based techniques of mini lessons, conferring, and strategy instruction teachers are able to meet the unique needs of each reacher to meet or exceed the expectations of the California Standards.

As part of this three-day Institute, each participant will reference the new TCRWP Units of Study for Teaching Reading curriculum, which:

  • provides state-of-the-art methods to help students move up the ladder of text complexity
  • builds foundational reading skills and strategies
  • supports the teaching of interpretation, synthesis, and main idea
  • supports inquiry and collaboration
  • helps teachers use learning progressions to assess students' reading work, develop their use of self-monitoring strategies, and set students on trajectories of growth

Join us for a hands-on professional learning experience! Breakout sessions will be offered to address the specific needs of grade level spans.

Prerequisites: Participants should be familiar with the writing Units of Study or workshop model. It would be beneficial if participants also have an understanding of either guided reading or small group reading strategies.

Recommendations: Reading Units of Study require access to a generous supply of quality trade books and reading materials in order to implement fully. It is highly recommend that participants either already have or plan to acquire comprehensive classroom libraries.
