ELD & Academic Writing (Grades K-5)

  • Dates: 09 – 09 Dec, 2019
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Elderwood Room

Wonder how ELD and writing fit together?

Each writing genre brings its own brand of academic language. In written text, things like organization, transitions, verb forms, sentence structure, and vocabulary networks change with the genre. English learners and Standard English learners alike benefit from intentional instruction to help them master the language of each of the text types that they read and write each day.

This interactive workshop will address:

  • The relationship between ELD and writing
  • The language and function of text types
  • Positive practices for teaching academic writing for English learners
  • Formative assessment of EL student writing
  • Differentiating supports for Emerging, Expanding, and Bridging levels of proficiency
  • Connections to modeled, shared, interactive, guided, and independent levels of writing
  • Intentional teaching as part of both Integrated & Designated ELD
