Conferring with Readers (Grades 4-12)

  • Dates: 27 – 27 Oct, 2022
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Suite A Willow Room

Learn how to spend three minutes building an authentic sense of belonging, and teaching a specific reading skill that improves reading achievement. Time spent reading self-selected books is the heart of independent reading. How does a teacher monitor their students' progress? Conferring with readers is the answer.

Conferring with a few students each day allows the teacher to assess how students are progressing as readers and to provide differentiated support to each child. A reading conference, that one-to-one interaction between an individual reader and teacher, is arguably the single most effective way to provide feedback that supports the student in moving up the literacy progression. Research argues that strong connections between student and teacher improves reading proficiency.

Conferences are relationship-building moments that provide the teacher with an opportune chance to connect and deepen their understanding of each student's social and emotional needs. We will highlight specific ways to monitor reading growth if you teach 30 students or 230 students. Learn effective questions that will advance your students' reading comprehension and level of complexity. Walk away with experience in leading an empathy interview to identify literacy needs, as well as practical prompts to guide your reading conferences.
