Rethinking Adolescent Literacy (Grades 4-12)

  • Dates: 29 – 29 Sep, 2022
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Suite A Willow Room

The shift in literacy from foundational to adolescent literacy in grades 4 through high school entails many changes. Motivation is the key to engagement especially when helping our students reignite from learning loss caused during the pandemic.

In this workshop, we will help you build motivated readers by highlighting over 60 current culturally-diverse book titles as we share evidence-based literacy strategies, curated especially for English learners in grades 4-12. We know these strategies motivate readers because we've used them in 4th-5th grade, middle school, and high school English classrooms throughout Tulare County. Come hear these stories!

Adolescents are successful when we help them understand that texts are written in social settings for social purposes. Caring, responsive classroom environments enable students to take ownership of literacy activities which can counteract negative motions that often lead to lack of motivation. Join this workshop if you are seeking that spark that reignites adolescent literacy! Leave with ideas to try out in your classroom the next day.

Participants will receive a copy of Game Changer!  Book Access for All Kids by Donalyn Miller and Colby Sharp.
