Building a Strong Reading Foundation (Grades TK-2)

  • Dates: 25 – 25 Jul, 2022
  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Suite A Willow Room

Learn how to build a strong foundation that yields proficient reading. In this course, we will explore what reading research tells us about how the brain learns to read. We will explore the "Simple View of Reading," which gives us a theoretical model for developing reading proficiency (Decoding + Linguistic Comprehension = Reading Comprehension). We will also take a closer look at this model through the lens of "Scarborough's Reading Rope," which reveals more about the complex processes embedded in the "Simple View of Reading." Additionally, we will explore how these essential foundations of reading can be strategically reinforced as well as enhanced across the instructional day. Participants will receive: Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into a Balanced Literacy Classroom by Jan Burkins and Kari Yates. This valuable resource addresses common misconceptions about reading development and zooms in on the What, When and Why of literacy instruction.
