Call for Local Poets!
The Tulare County Office of Education, the Arts Consortium, and California Poets in the Schools are partnering on a brand-new initiative called, The Tulare County Poet Project. Partially funded by the Visalia Community Arts Grant and the California Arts Council, this pilot project will partner three local schools with poets-in-residence for a week-long poetry writing seminar. Students will discover the magic of reading and writing a wide range of poetry. The project will culminate with an evening showcase of student-poets presenting their own creative works.
The Tulare County Poet Project is looking for published local poets who are interested in participating in this project as poet-teachers, working in area schools. Poets will work directly with California Poets in the Schools (CPitS) poet-teacher John Oliver Simon during Poetry Week, September 12-16, 2016. Mr. Simon, who is the President of CPitS, will train three to five local poets, who will subsequently be available to teach poetry in Tulare County schools. President Simon and the local poets will work in classrooms at three levels: elementary, middle school, and high school. Students will read the work of great poets with very close attention, write their own great poems based on a range of enjoyable prompts, learn to use poetic forms, and read their work aloud to classmates. Local poets will become adept in the literacy-enhancing strategies and techniques developed by CPitS over half a century. The Poetry Week will culminate in a gala reading Thursday night, September 15, at the TCOE Administration Building. The reading will feature Mr. Simon, the teacher-poets, and students from the project.
Note - Poets for the inaugural cohort have been selected, but please complete the survey below to join future training sessions!
