  • Location: Visalia

“Few things matter more to striving readers than expert and caring teachers who help them become thriving readers.” -Stephanie Harvey and Annie Ward

Becoming an expert reading teacher takes time, thoughtfulness, and deep study. This workshop will confirm the idea that “programs don’t teach kids, teachers do!” Good instruction is not just about students’ reading level but about their reading behaviors, attitudes and understandings. Expert teachers guide students in reading, writing, discussing, working hard and building knowledge.

This learning opportunity aims to:
  • Help readers develop a sense of agency as they move beyond independence;
  • Set up and maintain a classroom for collaboration, interaction and boundless reading;
  • Plan for whole group instruction, small group instruction, collaboration and independent reading;
  • Foster curiosity;
  • Ensure access to and choice of books;
  • Promote volume of reading;
  • Implement specific actions to promote ‘thinking-intensive’ reading in your classroom;
  • Understand assessment as inquiry to better inform your instruction.
This workshop will include a copy of From Striving to Thriving by Stephanie Harvey and Annie Ward
