Learning the Language of Narrative, Informational, and Opinion Texts

Look closer...Have you ever noticed how each of the three text types involves its own particular brand of academic language? In text, things like organization, transitions, verbs forms, sentence structure, and vocabulary networks can change with the genre. English learners and Standard English learners, alike, benefit from intentional instruction to help them master the language of each of the text types that they read and write each day.

The ELD and the Text Types series will address each of the three types to make visible the language hidden in narrative, informational/explanatory, and opinion text. These stand-alone sessions will each explore one of the Common Core text types and connect to the California ELD Standards to help educators support learners in building the language of literacy through designated and integrated ELD.

Session 2 Illuminating Informational Text  Shine a light on the language of informational/explanatory nonfiction text and the language of the sciences and research topics  April 29, 2019
