Elizabeth Jimenez Salinas: Long Term English Learners - Changing Learned Passivity Through Interactivity (Grades 6-12)

    09/20/2018 08:30:00

  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: TCOE Administration Building & Conference Center 6200 S. Mooney Blvd.

Many teachers describe one of their challenges working with Long Term English Learners as student disengagement or lack of motivation. Our research and experience shows that this is actually learned passivity which can be changed with the participation of all educators in the system.

Participants will look at two of the presenter’s outstandingly successful case studies cited in the 2010 Reparable Harm study by Laurie Olsen. We will also build deeper foundational knowledge of the five components of language as well as model, discuss and share robust, proven instructional strategies and considerations for raising Long Term English Learners’ achievement and English proficiency in middle and high school.

This session includes tools and templates for teachers across all content areas, recommendations for use of students’ primary languages/cultures, and\crafting content and language objectives.
