Building a strong continuum of literacy skills from Transitional Kindergarten through Kindergarten is not only essential to the intent of the two year Kindergarten program, but sets the foundation for reading success in the elementary grades. This workshop will provide support for the alignment of the Preschool Learning Foundations and the California Core State Standards for Kindergarten.

Areas of focus:

  • Alignment of Preschool Learning Foundations and CCSS for ELA
  • Identify the continuum of literacy skill development from Transitional Kindergarten through
  • Kindergarten and the age/grade appropriate expectations for mastery
  • Closer look at the development of the following:
Reading engagement strategies
Concepts about print
Print awareness
Phonological awareness
Alphabetics, phonics, decoding and word recognition
Early reading behaviors and strategies
Early writing behaviors and strategies
Fluency
Comprehension and analysis of age appropriate text
Language, grammar and vocabulary development
