The Power of the Small Group: Guiding Readers Strategically in Grades 3-8

    07/24/2018 08:30:00

  • Location: Visalia
  • Address: 7000 W Doe Avenue, Sycamore Room

California’s Standards focus on increased text complexity and rigorous reading across content areas. The Power of the Small Group offers essential tools in teaching strategies for developing readers in grades 3-8. Along with providing readers with timely differentiated instruction, it also fosters strong meta-cognitive behaviors as students actively attend to their understanding and response to text.

Participants will learn how to:
  • Foster independence and interests through the use of a variety of texts
  • Guide readers in smaller focused groups that allow for strategic and responsive teaching to refine skills needed to process complex texts in all content areas
  • Use a variety of assessment tools (running records, miscue analysis, anecdotal noting, conferring conferences etc.)
  • Establish routines that maximize the reciprocity of reading and writing skills
Participants will receive a copy of The Reading Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo.
